Long Story Short

I admit it, I'm proud of this one.

The way this came about was that my friend and frequent collaborator Sam Hargrave wanted to use my apartment as a set for a short he was doing on a Bolex.  In return for the six hours or so of "hassle" (why should I complain when the movie comes to me instead of vice versa?) and various grip, gaffing, and other help, Sam let me keep the two actors for an extra twenty minutes, and shoot this short film.  It consists of a single hand-held shot, 3 1/2 minutes or so.  We got it on the second take.  The actors very gamely ran around behind the camera changing their clothes while I shouted out instructions and tried to keep my shadow off the walls.

Sam gets a credit, as much of the action you see was originally blocked by him for his own short (an adaptation of Einstein's Dreams).  I changed the order and strung it together to tell my own story.

I think my hand held work is smoother now than it was then, but I'm even pleased with the flaws in this one.

Took out the color in post as some criminal has carpeted and painted my apartment in varying shades of puce.  Since I was in there, I crushed the blacks, added some glow to the highlights, and did day for night the first time we see the bedroom.
